Stormchase including wallcloud and mammatus near York, Grand Island and Hastings along Interstate 80 (Nebraska)
Today is een big chaseday! SPC Convective Outlook forecast a HIGH probability of severe weather in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Yesterday we decided to move to the north knowing we had to go as far as Nebraska. Tomorrow we have to return to Oklahoma to be in time to catch our plane to Chicago.Map: from Independence, Topeka (Kansas) to Nebraska City, Lincoln, York, Aurora, Grand Island, Hastings (Nebraska)
So we are now in Independence in the very south-eastern corner of Kansas and have to drive a big distance. Roy and I decide to start very early, that is getting up at 06:00, do our homework: investigating the situation. This homework starts at the SPC Outlook but we never stick with that. We always perform our own research based on models and on actual weatherdata such as the surfacemap. Most of the time Roy and I are in fairly good agreement and we both are quite happy with this.
As said: driving in the US is very comfortable, one knows fairly well when to arrive at a certain location. This is contrary with the Netherlands where we nearly always are plaqued by traffic jams... Around 15 o'clock we are near York along the Interstate 80 in Nebraska and sky is starting to change appearance... The first mammatus appear which is a sign for an anvil comming our way!
We move further to Grand Island where we have an intersection with highway 34. This is a strategic location because tornado's have to pass the 34 from the south-west to the north-east and the only thing we have to do is beiing at the correct location and time along this highway 34! When things turn out to become very bad and dangerous there is always an escape route along Interstate 80. So we move from a location north of Interstate 80 slowly to other locations south of Interstate 80. Here one recognises the advantages of the US roadsystem. One half of the roads is from west to east, the other half is from north to south. To chase after tornado's one should not use the Interstate as it is not possible to easily turn around, it is primarily used to move fast to the east or west or used as an escape route.
